Game of Thrones Filming Locations in Croatia

During our tour of Croatia this Summer we took the opportunity to visit the Game of Thrones filming locations in Split and Dubrovnik. Having a car allowed us to visit a couple of locations that weren’t in the city centres but most filming locations as you would expect were in the ‘Old Towns’ of Dubrovnik and Split.

Game of Thrones Filming Locations in Split

Split in Game of Thrones world is Mereen. Here you will mainly find locations that featured Daenerys Targaryen on her quest for the Iron Throne.

Daenerys’ Throne Room

The most famous of Split’s filming locations is in the very walls of Diocletain’s Palace – the gateway into the Old Town. You’ll find several Game of Thrones filming locations in here including where Daenerys keeps her dragons and most famously her Throne Room in the Great Pyramid. You’ll have to use your imagination here as the steps and her throne are props / CGI but you have to admit the room is pretty cool.

When walking through the gates from the harbour side you will see a small market that runs in a cross shape inside the walls. You can turn left, right or move straight forward and outside. The entrance to the Palace is both on the left or the right but to purchase tickets you need to go to the right. This side is also where the Throne Room is. It is a much bigger room than the rest and you will recognise it instantly. If you don’t there is someone at the ticket desk who can help you.

The Walls of Mereen

Next on the list of Game of Thrones filming locations in Split is Fortress of Klis, otherwise known as the walls of Mereen where Daenerys famously crucified 163 Slave Masters in retribution for their crucifixion of the same number of children to warn her away from the city.

The fortress of Klis is just outside Split and you will need a car to get here. Once parked, walk up to the gate and pay a small nominal fee (around £3) for entry. Once through you will immediately see the recognisable zig zag of the walkway up to the fort.

Game of Thrones Filming Locations in Dubrovnik

Just about every spot in the Old Town of Dubrovnik has been used in Game of Thrones at some point as Kings Landing. Mainly featuring the Lannisters, the city’s ancient tall walls, doorways and alleyways lend themselves perfectly to the mysteries of Game of Thrones.

Minceta Tower

Ok so I said Dubrovnik mainly featured the Lannisters but in this case it is again Daenerys. Minceta Tower was also used for the filming of the House of the undying in season 2 where Daenerys goes to retrieve her stolen young dragons who later kill their captor Pyat Pree.

Minceta Tower is actually part of the wall of Dubrovnik. Once a fort, it is the highest point in the Dubrovnik defence system and can be viewed from the streets below or entered into on a walk around the wall.

Fort Lovrijenac

Fort Lovrijenac doubles as the Red Keep in King’s Landing, the capital of the Seven Kingdoms and is used for filming many a conversation, Joffrey’s tournament and views out across the water.

Step outside the walls of Old Town through Pile Gate (near the water fountain) and water should be to your left. Follow the street (and probably some other Game of Thrones fans) to the left and you can’t miss it. A short steep climb up some steps beside a popular kayaking harbour will reward you with some of the best views of Dubrovnik.

Pile Gate

Talking of Pile Gate…around this area you will recognise the foreboding double doors which is the main entrance to Dubrovnik Old Town. In Game of Thrones this is where the Lannister procession,  returning after Myrcella’s send off, is attacked by an angry mob.

Very simply you will walk through the gate on your exit of The Old Town. You will most likely either enter Dubrovnik Old Town either by this gate or the harbour. If you enter by the harbour, simply walk down the main street until you see a water fountain then walk through an archway and you will see the gates.

Pile Port

Also in this area is Pile Port which doubles as the pier from which you see Little Finger discussing his plans of escape with Sansa and where Myrcella bids her parents farewell before leaving for Dorne.

St Dominika Street

Recognise this doorway? You should, it’s used for the market place in King’s Landing as well as the spot for countless murders of King Robert’s illegitimate sons.

Entering from the harbour side, after the initial archway but before the Old Town Walls you will see a street to your left. It’s about a 1-2 minute walk from the harbour.

Rector’s Palace

Most of Qarth is shot on Lokrum Island which we didn’t make it to however some scenes were also shot in Dubrovnik including parts of the home of the Spice King who Daenerys paysa visit to to barter for ships  which he denies as he needs them for transporting his spices. He doesn’t see Dany as a good bet. He is later killed by Pyat.

As you come in through the walls of Dubrovnik from the harbour side, take a left and walk past the water fountain. It should be the next building on your left. There’s an entrance fee but if you’re just looking for a peek of this room you luckily need only stand at the entrance.

The Spanish Steps

The Spanish Steps or SHAME stairs are in the heart of Dubrovnik. I don’t really need to explain what they’re used for as they’re almost as recognisable as The Dark Hedges. SHAAAAAAAMMMEEE

The Spanish Steps will lead you up to Saint Ignatius Church and can be found on the opposite of the market area of Dubrovnik.
